Afonka Doesn't Want to Herd Reindeer Anymore| 1hr : 16mins
Director: Martin Rysavy | Producer: Ondrej Trojan, Galina Sustova
Focus Years: 2004 | Country: Czech Republic
Afonka does not want to herd reindeer anymore. The ethnographic discoveries made through the documentary film have enabled the Czech director to express his personal experience of the contemporary Siberia contrast. His wide view touches the basic issues of the human destiny, social relations and the nation's fate, it is a poetry of facts composed of long scenes of the everyday hunt of life. On this intuitive journey with nomads he uses meditation, the snowy beauty of the endless landscape, the rough reality of reindeer disemboweling, lyricism and colliding contrasts in the course of reassessing the traditional values by somebody coming from Central Europe. The main heroes of the film, which is also filled with the thoughts and verses of the Even poet Mikhail Kolesov, are a young reindeer drover Afanasiy and his grandaunt Maria. While the old woman wishes that her family continued living in the traditional way after she dies, young Afonka is not so sure about it. But the only thing he really has in his blood is just pasturage.
