Director: Briar March | Producer: Ryan Malloy
Focus Years: 2011 | Country: United States
Synopsis:
Sick Wid It follows the daily life of Antoine Sawyer, a 19 year-old dancer for whom turfin’ is not only a competitive dance sport, but also a life philosophy. TURF dancing began as a form of creative expression in response to rampant violence in urban neighborhoods. In recent years it has evolved into a popular dance style for African-American and Asian-American youth, gaining tens of thousands of hits on Youtube, and practiced and performed all over the United States and abroad. The name TURF dancing is an acronym for the term “taking up room on the floor,†which accurately reflects one of the basic tenets of the dance style: dancers make themselves as undeniably visible as possible as they pour out stunning interpretive, free flowing moves, often using elements of miming and optical illusions, in an explosion of creative expression. Through observational scenes, and visual displays of his dancing, we learn how this unique dance style is providing meaning and inspiration to a growing community of youth in the Bay Area of California.
