Director: Gautam Syiem & Sonata Dkhar | Producer: Panos South Asia & Eastern Panorama
Focus Years: 2010 | Country: India
Synopsis:
The film is set in the Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, India, where rampant coal mining has engulfed large parts of the land. This has led to drastic changes in the livelihood patterns and resulted in environmental degradation. While most people of the state wait for the mining policy to be re-drafted and see the light of day to improve their condition, the people of Shangpung, a small village in these hills, have taken it in their own hands to look after their Mei Ramew (Mother Nature). The film, while based on the theme of environmental sustainability, is an effort to contextualize collective human endeavors which lead to and help in bringing about positive changes in the environment they live.
