Betsy Greeredit
Welcome
When working on documentaries, I start with an idea that resonates with me. I have an inherent belief that there are stories to tell everywhere, and because of my background in journalism I believe everyone has a story to tell. This belief helps when coming up with ideas for future documentaries I ask myself who or what do I want to fight for or preserve the story of a person, lifestyle or culture.
Recently my work has dealt with history and memories. I’m interested how those memories make me, as a filmmaker, nostalgic about my childhood and my life growing up. Memories have always fascinated me, because at some point I feel as though we should question our memories. My own memories have made me question where I belong and the longing that I feel to belong somewhere.
Preserving memory is important for history. Another aspect that inspires my work is history and the evolution of technology has allowed me to save or document history for later generations. I have learned that everyone’s story is important to history and when someone dies, we lose pieces of the past. With the technology that is available now, it is very easy to preserve these stories and preserve the past.
There are many different ways to tell a story and I think in linear terms. But with the advancement in technology and software, I think documentaries can be structured in different ways to tell the story.
