'Hibakusha, Our Life to Live' tells the stories of Japanese, Korean and American survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Their stories unfold through the journey of Yoko, an eight-year old girl and Eiji, a survivor and Yoko's music teacher. Little by little Yoko learns about Eiji’s hibakusha experience. Soon she discovers Sadako and the story of the thousand cranes. Just as they are to embark on their pilgrimage to Hiroshima, Eiji suddenly and unexpectedly dies. Harada-san, another survivor, offers to take Yoko to the Peace Festival. The 60th Hiroshima commemoration includes all from a solemn ceremony near the Peace Museum to a frenzy of song, dance and art in the Peace Park. Just as a crescendo is reached, the audience is brought back to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, bringing the gruesome reality of the bombing into the present time. Further, the bombing of Nagasaki is illustrated through a Shinto wedding party turned to ashes. A chorale group in Nagasaki’s Peace Park performs Beethoven’s 'Choral Fantasy', which serves as a back drop to statements made by children survivors countered with statements by scientists, who downplay the serious effects of the atomic bomb. Yoko’s journey parallels that of Davey, an American boy who learns of the bombings from Hollywood movies and World War II propaganda. Both Yoko and Davey end their journeys filled with questions directed at the authorities about who make war. The film's narrator draws attention to family photos from nations where nuclear weapons are still proliferating. Black rain fall on the photos and obliterate all human expression from the faces.
