At first glance, Jo Calvino is just an ordinary girl. She’s attractive and giggly, a touch flirtatious. She enjoys going out for a curry with her family, to clubs with her mates. She has normal hobbies, normal friends, and what appears to be a pretty normal life. But she can also lift nearly six times her own body weight. That’s because Jo, all 4 foot 11 inches of her, is a weight-lifter. She can squat more then 20 stone and snatch up to 15 stone. But what is even bigger than her lifting prowess are her dreams: to represent Britain in the 2012 London Olympics. And while these goals might be considered lofty for most, for Jo they are very real. At 28, she is regarded as the number one UK lifter in her weight class. She has set several British records and has already competed in the Commonwealth Games three times. While she has yet to make it onto an Olympic squad, many believe 2012 will be her best and final shot at Olympic glory. "Clean and Jerk" delves into the world of female lifting through the story of Jo Calvino. In order for Jo to realize her dreams, she has to do one thing: win. She enters herself in as many competitions as she can all across Europe in order to raise her profile as the premier lifter in the UK. We follow her on the next step along that journey, as she competes in the English Weight Lifting Championships held in Halifax. With exclusive access to the before, the during and the after in competition, we find out just how much it takes to compete in one of Britain’s most demanding and obscure sports from its smallest competitor.
