Rural women are the social and economic foundations of rural communities. They care for the family and community and contribute significantly to economic production through farming and marketing. However, they are overlooked in agricultural and rural development policies and their contributions are undervalued. In policies which do consider rural women, they are spoken for but are not heard and their voices are not decisively and meaningfully carried forward to policymakers, nor do policymakers seek them out. Rural women are not waiting to be helped. Across Africa and Asia, rural women organize themselves in formal and informal groups to support each other to face their struggles.
