Synopsis:
Our perception of China tends to be that of an exotic country with an ancient culture, partly secluded from the outer world due to its totalitarian regime and information-targeted censorship. Yet, at the same time, it is the largest of the world’s economies with huge political and military potential, which it does not hesitate to use in order to promote its own interests. But what do we know of the life of ordinary Chinese people? Can we actually imagine what it is like? Would we manage to live among them?
This challenge was taken up by a Czech sinologist, who moved himself and all his family, including small children, to a Chinese small town with historical ties to socialist Czechoslovakia and Czech farmers. It was they who helped to ameliorate the underdeveloped rural areas in China in the 1950s, and their "brotherly" help has not been forgotten even after seventy years. Both the renewed friendship and new urbanization, consciously resembling the Czech and European architecture, are becoming symbols of memories of the old times. How is the young Czech family – with an ambitious father standing at the helm – going to contribute to the developing relations? That is precisely what the documentary film Happy Together tries to show.
