In the year 2050, there will be 9 billion people in the world. How do we make sure every mouth is fed? This series takes us around the world to examine the future of food. In this episode, Future Food is in Kenya where the battle between food and fuel crops is being fought. It’s estimated that over the next 20 years, world demand for biofuels will need an area one and a half times the size of Kenya. Jatropha’s the biofuel that everyone’s talking about here. It’s billed as a wonder plant because it grows in marginal land where food crops don’t flourish. So in theory, jatropha could mean growing biofuels without jeopardizing food security. But farmers like Moses Shaha are skeptical. If farmers switch to growing biofuels, can they still feed the world?
