Focus Years: 2013 | Country: Italy
Synopsis:
In the year 2050, there will be 9 billion people in the world. How do we make sure every mouth is fed? This series takes us around the world to examine the future of food. In this episode, Future Food is in China where young people are obsessed with the online game "Happy Farms" but have no interest in careers as farmers. With massive migrations of young people to the cities, a quarter of traditional farmlands now lie idle because there is no one to work on them. And it's not just a Chinese phenomenon. The average Chinese farmer is 50 years old. But in the USA, they are 58, and in Japan, over 60. How can aging farmers feed the future? And how can farming be "re-branded" to attract the youth?
