Synopsis:
Radek Jaroš in a film about surmounting life’s peaks wherever they may be. Climbing Higher tells a story of determination and of overcoming human limits, both shared and personal. But it also speaks of compromise and of the price paid to achieve an exceptional personal accomplishment. Radek Jaroš is the first Czech and only the 15th person in the world to fulfill every mountain climber’s dream: ascending the Crown of the Himalayas, the world’s 14 tallest mountains. The movie is an outstanding opportunity for viewers to become a real part of the K2 expedition by sharing in Radek’s experience as he and climbing buddies Miska and Tráva undergo a harrowing journey up an 8000er with a movie camera in tow. The most majestic peaks are suddenly within reach of all who admire the mountains but would never attempt such an adventure on their own. Audiences experience the climbers’ fears and triumphs as they happen and feel the burden – at such incredible elevations – of every arduous step and every labored breath. But there’s more: the awesome beauty everywhere to behold, for which many have paid the highest price. Different from other mountaineering movies, Climbing Higher also delves into personal stories not connected to the expedition, involving the members of the Jaroš family. The movie captures their sometimes desperate attempts to cope with their fears for Radek as they try to understand him – or at least come to terms with his penchant for danger. Climbing Higher is more than a record of a historic moment in Czech mountaineering. It also looks more broadly at people’s ability to overcome extreme obstacles, and not just in the physical sense of the word. Radek Jaroš said about the film: “We shot in places where most people would be scared to death because there’s only a third of the oxygen. People who come see the movie should realize it isn’t an action film but a documentary that also includes my relationships, problems, and joys. Audiences can look forward to beautiful shots from places where only some dozens of people from our whole planet had ever been.”
