Synopsis:
It all started in 2010, while preparing a film that we ultimately hoped would reveal the roots of a global phenomenon - Somali piracy. We were not satisfied with the image of evil Somali pirates attacking defenseless merchant ships. This universally accepted truth quickly fell apart upon closer inspection of local conditions. And relatively few at the time knew that the entire situation had been caused by multinational fishing companies' unregulated plundering of fish in the Gulf of Aden, and along with it, the livelihood of locals along the longest coast of Africa. The world looked on helplessly as African boys in sandals overtook tankers standing as tall as an eight-storey building. God knows how they managed to climb aboard, not to mention how they managed to avoid naval fleets sent by the European Union to protect the sea lanes. Regardless of our modern navigational and satellite equipment, they remain the masters of these seas. It is incredible that the lure of money lies behind all of this – anyone resorting to such demented acts must be desperate. Most of them are uneducated local fishermen who no longer hunt fish, but rather people. However, the fate of such pirates surviving these attacks does not end in Somalia, but rather far beyond its borders, where they disappear along with their money, because no one in Puntland stashing money at home lives to see tomorrow. Our story begins in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. It is actually here, in the Somali neighborhood of Eastleigh, where many former pirates and their money disappear. In the middle of its muddy roads without infrastructure absurdly emerge modern high-rise buildings, and the money from the Somali attacks is laundered. That district goes by the nickname Little Mogadishu. We shot a series of interviews with various outlaws. In the end, we chose Hassan – a young, adventurous pirate who was not afraid to share his dark past. He was natural and had an interesting, moving story.
We shot a parallel story in Somalia. The idea was to combine Hassan's story of a pirate in exile with that of Abdilahi, a young Somali on the Puntland coast, who must decide whether to continue playing his beloved football, or join up with the pirates for good money. The choice is not easy. His best friend Muse is already sitting in a U.S. prison for the next 33 years after a failed pirate hijacking. We followed both stories up until the moment we found out that our pirate Hassan was playing a double game with us…
