Synopsis:
We whisper tender words to our coffee machines, swear at inattentive automatic doors and encourage old rust-buckets. We often talk to the apparatuses that surround us. But they seldom reply! Machines that do reply are fascinating. The elevator that kindly welcomes you, or the clock that wishes to convey the passing of time. For a brief moment they feel alive, and enter the world of mortals. It brings about an odd mixture of wonder and compassion. Awe, because of the unexpectedness and pity for its inherent sadness. The endless repetition of phrases with so much courtesy, without any resentment or insubordination. And without anybody saying “thank you” in return. The film “Automat” is an impressionistic homage to our mechanical companions and an attempt to discover their inner lives! Men created from the dust of the ground, the machine. And breathed into him the breath of life. And the machine learned to speak.
