Featuring the largest trail network in the Cyclades Prefecture, the island of Tinos is aching to be walked but visitors are still dragging their feet. Split down the middle by its dual Catholic-Orthodox faith and strewn with intricate pigeon lofts that may appear quaint but in fact attest to the island’s past idiosyncratic eating habits, Tinos largely remains a mystery. And the best way to explore it is still on foot. Karolos Merlin, a trekking guide and cartographer, has already unearthed 300km of well-carved footpaths and is struggling to create human traffic, the only remedy against the all-effacing forces of time. On a nearby trail, a group of volunteers from the EU are engaged in a hands-on preservation program coordinated by local architect Ioanna Papastathopoulou. A cultural heritage management specialist, Papastathopoulou sheds some light on the sloping landscape that turned pigeons into an animal farming asset, while dedicated plant pathologist Yiannis Aspromougos, a recent addition to the island, is doing his damnedest to help local farmers make the best of what they've got.
